I'm curious to find out if anyone gets a message on their device (tablet or phone), when trying to access Dreamwidth or Livejournal, of either "A secure connection cannot be established" or "Connectivity problems"? My brother's rather old tablet won't connect at all to either site ("Connectivity problems"), and my smartphone gives the "A secure connection..." message and then lets me in. I never have trouble accessing either site on my ancient laptop. Dreamwidth and LJ are the only two sites I've had an ongoing problem with.

I finally ran out of my old hand and body moisturizer and wanted something new, and thought I'd try a very reasonably priced jar of Jergens Hydrating Coconut Crema. It's lovely, except that Pippin wants to lick every drop of it off my hands.

I came across this passage from Stranger in a Strange Land, and it got me thinking (again) about how much I love and appreciate Livejournal.

Ben: "I can't go back."

Jubal: "They'll take you back with open arms and never ask why you left."

I've been on Livejournal more than 12 years, and it's still my sole 'social media' site. Every morning when I log on to LJ, it's like going to the mailbox and finding it stuffed with letters, gifts, beautiful photographs, articles, news of friends past and present, and postcards from all over the world. Sometimes a friend will wander away from LJ, perhaps for years, but if they choose to return they're welcomed back enthusiastically and warmly. (At least, that's been my experience.) LJ is my online home, and my connection to friends, information, support, TLC, laughter, and advice. I'm so happy to be here with you all.

Here's a picture of Pippin falling asleep in Shiremom's arms. I hope your Saturday is just as relaxing.

My LJ post fonts are all wacky suddenly. I see on the Support page that some other folks are having the same issue. Hope they can get it sorted out.

Pippin, my dear sweet Scavenger Hound, is suddenly trying to pick up every mangy, disgusting, icky whatever-it-is from the sidewalk and taste it. I have to watch her every second. She's very snuggly, though, which makes up for a lot.

Chapter 10 to Beta-mom tonight, yay! I'm so happy to get it finished.

Regarding the [livejournal.com profile] news announcement about LJ/Facebook/Twitter connections, they've posted an update to their original post:

"Update: Thank you for taking the time to offer your honest feedback. We understand and appreciate your desire for privacy. We share your concerns. Most of us would not want to publish our LiveJournal usernames or FO comments to Facebook or Twitter either (to the extent we even use them). Please give us a little time to address your concerns. We are listening, and we'll do our best to respond."

I don't have a Facebook account, I haven't Tweeted in at least a year, and Dreamwidth is just one of my emergency back-up journals. So I'm just watching and waiting. Hopefully this will all get straightened out sooner rather than later.

And now... back to our regularly scheduled hobbits work.

If you have an LJ or an LJ community that hasn't been updated for two years or more, you might want to play it safe and post something there. From [livejournal.com profile] news (bolding is mine):

Purging inactive accounts: One of the benefits of the work we've done to purge suspended accounts is that we will now be able to purge inactive journals and communities too--something you've been requesting for years! A journal is defined as inactive if it has not been logged into for 24 consecutive months and has only one post (i.e., the welcome post). A community is defined as inactive if has not been updated for 24 consecutive months and has only one entry and no comments. Once an account is eligible to be purged for inactivity, the owner will be sent an email to alert them of the inactive status. The owner will then have two weeks to log into the journal or post to their community to prevent it from being deleted. If the owner does not log in or post, the account will be deleted and treated like any other deleted account (the owner will have 30 days to log in and undelete the account to prevent it from being purged). Purging inactive accounts will take place sometime after we've begun purging suspended accounts, probably in late August.

In case anyone is interested, I got an answer from LJ Support about the length of messages that can accompany virtual gifts:

"There is a limit to the length of a virtual gift note. They can be about the size of a LiveJournal entry, which is a maximum size of 65,536 bytes (64 KB). If you exceed the limit, you will receive an error stating "Error: VGift note too long", and you can then edit the note to shorten it."

And I thought four sentences would be too long! :)

Gosh, I still love this icon. It was my very first one. Do any of you still use (even occasionally) your first LJ icon?

Dreamwidth

There's been a lot of buzz about the new journal site, Dreamwidth, and I did make an account there so I could get the name 'Shirebound'. (I'm tired of getting to sites late, like GMail, and finding "my" name already taken!) Dreamwidth is JUST a back-up site for me (the same as my back-up site at Insane Journal), and I won't be there unless LJ is having an outage. Livejournal is my home, and I love it here.

It's going to be a busy work-week, but I really will *finally* get chapter 8 posted this week.

And... I actually beat my mom at Scrabble yesterday, which is a rare and wondrous event. S-A-L-I-V-A-R-Y on the triple-word score, using all 7 letters! *preens*

*hugs all and runs off to get ready for work*

I see that a few folks are re-posting their very first LJ post as a way of celebrating LJ's 10th Anniversary. Mine is below in italics, from 2003. And my 6-year LJ anniversary is coming up in a few weeks; it's a good time to look back.

At the time I got an LJ invite-code (thank you, [livejournal.com profile] kookaburra1701 and [livejournal.com profile] claudia603), I thought I would use LJ only to post fic. I had just been banned from ff.net for two weeks, with one chapter of "Quarantined" left to post, because someone thought a poem I had written should not have been in the LOTR category. (I *still* think it's a LOTR poem). I had hesitated getting into this "LJ thing" because I was afraid it would eat up every second of spare time I had. (It has, and I love it. Being forced to find a new place to interact with LOTR folks turned out to be a blessing in disguise.) I never dreamed that, years later, I would have found such a warm community here... offering love, encouragement, information, creativity, and incredible friendships that still take my breath away. I never dreamed I'd still be writing fic, or that "Quarantined" would spawn so many fluffy sequels. But I *did* know that I'd still love hobbits. (Some things never change.)

Thank you all, for making LJ one of my favorite places to be... with some of my favorite people on earth.

May 1, 2003:

Omigosh, another baby boomer gets dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century! I'll familiarize myself with this brave new world of the LiveJournal step by step.

Thanks folks, and especially Paula! I feel very welcomed!

My FANFICTION.NET "upload access" has been temporarily suspended. As soon as it is restored, Chapter 20 of "Quarantined" will be posted. This chapter will contain tentative summaries of two new stories flying about in my brain. One person told me that these "suspensions" last a few days, and someone else said a month! I'll just try it every day and hope for the best. If this lasts longer than a few days, I'll probably post the chapter here.

I just noticed that when I click on the "edit" icon for a past entry, there's a place to edit the date and time. I didn't know we could do that! I just took a privatized entry that's a few days old, edited the date and time to today, a few minutes ago, and it leaped right to the head of my entries! I thought we had to copy the text of a privatized entry, and then re-post it. Goodness, I've been going to a lot of extra trouble for nothing.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] lbilover pointed out that such re-dated entries may not show up on your f'list, and I think she's right. *pouts*

I wanted to share something I just learned from [livejournal.com profile] sayhello about polls. Apparently, there's an LJ glitch that makes the list of "answers" (names of folks who have responded to polls) blank. The LJ "known issues" page has this to say:

"Some users are receiving a "(No answers)" message when attempting to view detailed results to polls that have responses. This issue will be fixed in LiveJournal's next code release. In the meantime, you can view detailed poll results by opening the "View Answers" link in a new tab or window in your browser"

In other words, if you right-click on the "view answers" link, then click on "open in new tab" or "open in new window", you'll see the list of respondees.

Wacky. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] sayhello!

Just a note that I've done a teensy bit of 'housecleaning' to my friends list, deleting about a dozen journals that seem to have been abandoned, or for a few other reasons.

It's supposed to be 86 degrees today (about 30C)!!

I'm wandering off to find some breakfast, but first, [livejournal.com profile] belleferret posted about Sean Astin campaigning for Hillary Clinton at the University of Pennsylvania, and attending "Spring Fling" (an annual outdoor festival). I mentioned that was my alma mater, and Belle asked me to post a picture of me at Spring Fling. So here it is, from... 1977! This is a button I saved from way back when.

I know there's an LJ "strike" being planned for March 21, which I respect, but I won't be participating because a dear friend's birthday is tomorrow, and sending a greeting on someone's birthday means a lot to me.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, this was just posted in [livejournal.com profile] lj_2008:

The announcement last Wednesday was a mistake in regards to Basic accounts, as the change was not clearly stated, it did not allow for you to provide feedback, and went into effect immediately. Many of you have pointed out that the decision worried you less than the way it was communicated. You should have been given a voice, and you were not; we didn’t follow our own rules, and we apologize.

At this point we are working on a solution to enable existing LiveJournal users to create new Basic accounts as so many of you have requested. Nothing has been decided yet, but we are considering options which would allow existing users to continue to create new Basic accounts

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lbilover, I just created yet another back-up journal -- at JournalFen. (I'm also at greatjournal -- my "main" back-up -- and insanejournal.) Anyone who has a journal at JournalFen is welcome to 'friend' me! Livejournal is still my primary journal; I only try the others when LJ is having problems.

*feels thoroughly backed-upped now*

If Livejournal ever crashes temporarily, do folks still head over to Greatestjournal.com to huddle in the dark and light candles? Or is it Insanejournal.com, or both? I haven't visited either one in quite awhile, but I want to be able to find folks in case of an emergency...

This new LJ feature looks very interesting, but I can't figure out when or why I'd ever use it! Copied from the last [livejournal.com profile] paidmembers post:

Filter Your Journal by Security Level
You'll be excited to hear that we've implemented a much-requested new feature for our Paid Account holders. You can now filter your journal by security level, which means you can easily see all entries that you posted public, friends only, private, or even to a custom friends group. All you need to use is this URL:

http://frank.livejournal.com/security/level

Replace frank with your own journal and replace level with: public, friends, private, or group:groupname.

This new feature is available for use by Paid Members on any journal, or by any user on a Paid Member's account.

On the home front, I need to visit a friend in the hospital today during my lunch hour. She went in on September 18 for knee replacement surgery, and two days later, developed pneumonia and ended up on a respirator. Poor thing is still in the hospital after nearly a month, but is finally on the mend. I wonder if she got the lung infection in the hospital, or it was developing before she got there? Scary.

For anyone interested, it looks like Viggo is scheduled to appear on David Letterman tonight.

I have a question! I've seen you folks post a picture, and when you click on the picture it gets bigger. How do you do that? Also, there are some pictures/banners that are actually links to other sites. How do you do THAT? There's still so much I don't know...

And I'm in auto repair shock right now. A lady in a car 'nudged' my car at a gas station when I was in the little office paying for gas, then she sped away. (A good Samaritan got her license plate number, thank goodness.) The damage to my bumper appears so minor it can barely be seen, but I dutifully got an estimate today for my insurance company. Repairs will be... $1,152.39 PLUS the cost of a rental car for a week. I couldn't *believe* it when I heard the total. Thank goodness my insurance will cover all but the deductible, and if I can track down the hit-and-run lady at the DMV, and if she has insurance, maybe it will all be covered. But wow, that's a lotta money for a slightly off-kilter bumper. My poor baby. *pets car*

I can see my recent post ("Master of Middle-earth, Part II"). It's right there on my LJ. But if I try to "open" it to read or respond to comments, I get an error message of "page cannot be found". Huh?? I tried to leave a comment of my own, and was able to type one, but when I clicked on "submit comment", I got the same error message. It's like the page containing the comments can't be opened or read.

Very strange...

But at least it's Saturday.

ETA: Fixed! Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] claudia603, for suggesting I just re-start my computer.
shirebound: (Default)
I have no plans to leave LJ, but I decided to make a journal over at insanejournal.com as a backup to GJ, which is a backup to LJ. *sigh* If anyone has a journal over there and wants to 'friend' me, I can be found at

http://shirebound.insanejournal.com/

I doubt I'll ever use that site (although I do visit GJ when LJ goes down) but... I guess it's better to err on the side of too many journals as opposed to too few.
shirebound: (Default)
I'm having a problem with my friends page not updating or refreshing, so I may not see any new posts until this glitch is fixed.

ETA: It seems to be okay now, except for a few posts that seem to be appearing and then disappearing. Very strange.

Oh wow, I never knew we could post via e-mail. Thanks for the "heads up",
[livejournal.com profile] lily_the_hobbit!

ETA: It took about 8 minutes after I sent the e-mail for this post to show up. What a cool function.

I haven't posted anything about recent LJ/fandom/fanfic events because my LJ was, is, and always will be about one thing: "Comfort, Cuddles, and Chuckles. And Hobbits". This statement has been posted from Day One on my user info page. I'm still here, still posting fluff, fun, and fic, and don't plan to stop doing so. After four years of finding friends, inspiration, and community, I hope to continue to do so for a long, long time. I've read, researched, and thought about the same issues as all of you over this past week, and have decided to simply... continue to be myself.

That said, I still keep an emergency back-up journal on GreatestJournal.com, as I have for many years. I use it only when/if LJ experiences its occasional outages and we can't communicate here. If anyone wants to 'friend' me there and hasn't already, it's at http://shirebound.greatestjournal.com/

And now off to get ready for work! Omigosh, tomorrow is June already. *boggles*

*massive hugs and loves for my precious friends*
shirebound: (Piglet signature)
There may be massive delays in my responses to comments, as LJ seems to be delivering e-mails to me about 8-10 hours late. Anyone else having problems?

But.... Froday! Yay.

LJ "tags"

shirebound: (Default)
Since I haven't archived any of my entries in 'memories' for a long time (I never could get the hang of that!), I'm so happy about the LJ "tag" feature. I've mentioned this before, but for new folks, you can bookmark the page where ALL your 'tags' are listed, to easily find entries that have been tagged. For example, here's my page:

http://shirebound.livejournal.com/tag/

Just replace my name with yours, to find and bookmark *your* (or anyone's) list.

Our new search will respect your privacy settings.

Oooh, how exciting! [livejournal.com profile] sila_lumenn gave me perfect directions, and now I know how to get a picture on one side of a post and text on the other. A new toy to play with! *bounce bounce bounce*
shirebound: (Default)
When I click on "Edit entries", then click on a past entry to edit, there's now a pull-down menu in the upper left corner of the screen showing all the months of the year. The month of the entry being edited is highlighted. Has this been there all along and I just now noticed it? And... what purpose does it serve? (I only see this *after* I locate and click on an actual entry to be edited.)

*is puzzled*

Okay, let's see if I can ask this in a way that makes sense. You know how, if there are more than 50 comments to a post, LJ starts "collapsing" the comments into 'threads'? You then have to click on an individual 'thread' link to see (un-collapse) all the comments that were left to a single comment, then move on to the next 'thread' and click on that, etc. In other words, you can't see ALL the comments left at one time... you have to un-collapse each thread one by one.

So... IS there any way to expand everything all at once? If there are multiple collapsed comments to a post, is there something you can click on to see all the threads expanded at once, instead of one at a time?

In case I'm making no sense, here's an example of a post with multiple collapsed-threads:
